Chapter 17
The more time that passed, the more concerned Jack grew. They’d heard six shots in total, including the one that had woken them. Finally Jack heard voices approaching and the muffled sound of a discussion coming from just outside the room. He disengaged himself from Ianto, resisting the urge to kiss him as Ianto looked back with trusting eyes. He gently laid him back and went to the door, hand tightly gripping his borrowed weapon.
He reached for the door knob just as a soft knocking echoed through the dark room. He opened it cautiously, breathing an audible sigh of relief to see Baker standing there. He opened the door further and light from the hallway streamed into the room. Six of the eight squad members were there, whispering in hushed tones.
“What hap…” he began, but stopped when he saw what Baker held clasped tightly in his trembling hands. It was his Webley, and it was splattered with blood.
Baker held it out, and as Jack took it, Baker clasped his hand tightly for a moment.
“You were right Jack; he came for me. If you hadn’t assigned those guards… Anyways, he panicked when he saw them and fired off a few shots. They had no choice but to take him down. He’s dead Jack.” Baker looked relieved, but Jack looked over at the six huddled men, down by two. Baker understood. “Carter got clipped in the arm. He’ll be fine. One of the others escorted him to the medical bay.
Jack was grateful that no one died because he let Harris get away. “Thanks Baker. I’m glad you’re ok.”
“How’s Ianto?” Jack was pleased that Baker seemed genuinely concerned. It was a comfort to know that Jack could trust him to help keep Ianto safe.
“He’s in pain, but considering what he’s been through… well, he’s fine Baker. Thanks.”
They parted hoping for at least another hour of sleep before morning. Jack set the squad up on two man rotations to stand guard by his door. Ianto was still a prisoner and Jack didn’t want any further misunderstandings, on either side.
Returning to Ianto, he could see that the other man had been listening intently.
“Heard all that?” Ianto nodded.
It was only when Jack was lying down again did it occur to him that Ianto had never once asked why Harris had tried to kill him. There was no way for him to know what had happened between Jack and Harris. He was about to ask Ianto about it when it suddenly occurred to him that Ianto didn’t think there needed to be a reason. He’d accepted the beating, not questioning the reasoning behind it. It was Harris’ right to beat him and Ianto’s responsibility to endure it. Jack’s hands balled into fists. He wished they still had that resurrection glove. He’d bring Harris back just to kill him again. But the resurrection days were over. The glove had been destroyed. Jack growled unconsciously.
“What’s wrong Jack?”
“Nothing Ianto… I was just wishing… you see, we had this glove back at Torchwood. Neat alien tech. It could bring back the dead for a minute or two so that you could ask them questions, like how they died and who they were. We called it the Resurrection Gauntlet.”
Ianto snorted, “That’s a lame name for a cool super secret device.”
“You have a better idea?” Jack asked grinning.
Ianto seemed lost in thought for a moment, “What about… the Risen Mitten?”
It was Jack’s turn to laugh. Ianto mumbled under his breath with mock offence, “I think it’s catchy.”
“Well, I was wishing I had it so that I could bring Harris back and then kill him again.” He ignored Ianto’s frown. “No chance of that, the glove was destroyed. The resurrection days are over.”
“Oh, I wouldn’t be too sure.” Jack looked over curiously. “That’s the thing about gloves Sir; they come in pairs.” Jack looked intently at the other man, impressed by his insight and a little disturbed at the implication he hadn’t considered before.
Ianto closed his eyes and drifted off again, but this time Jack lay awake and studied what he knew of the other man.
Ianto was an archivist, with Torchwood training. He’d proven himself strong, determined and more than a little intelligent. He was exactly what they needed at Torchwood; all of them broken misfits like him… well, except Gwen perhaps, but she was the exception. If Jack could somehow twist a few arms, call in a few favors, perhaps even offer up a piece of alien junk as incentive, maybe he could get Ianto. He’d unexpectedly grown attached to the young man sleeping next to him. Jack couldn’t see leaving him behind in the hands of UNIT. Jack owed him. He was responsible for Ianto now and he’d be damned if he left him to rot alone here.
At 7am Baker returned to collect Jack for his final day of inspections. Tonight would be his last night here and in the morning he was scheduled to leave. Unfortunately he was no closer to solving the mystery of Ianto Jones. Tosh still hadn’t called back, although he was confident she was trying her best, and the Brigadier evaded all questions concerning Ianto’s crime. Jack wanted to focus of the task at hand but knew his mind would keep coming back to Ianto as the day dragged on. As he left the room, he looked back at Ianto, imprinting the sight of him asleep in his mind. For the first time in a very, very long time, Jack felt blessed. For so long he’d felt as though the universe had done nothing but take, take, take… maybe now it was giving something in return; a second chance to make a difference in Ianto Jones’ life. It was a chance he wanted to take, and this time he was going to do things right!

Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. :)
I hope Jack wont do anythign stupid when he finds out what Ianto did. Especially as he is so vulnerable now when he trusts Jack. Glad Baker is alive though!
When does Jack EVER do anything stupid... er... well...
(I'm going to get hit, aren't I?)
Oh I realy hope Jack can persuade UNIT to let him take Ianto.
LOvin this fic more and more
It is highly unlikely UNIT will let Ianto go...
Thanks! So glad you love it! :D
Thanks for writing!
Thanks for reading!
But Baker is all right and Jack is making plans to take Ianto with him. But I don't think that UNIT will let him go just like this.
Yes, UNIT has no intention of letting Ianto go, no matter what Jack offers.
Thanks! :D
Great update. Loving the story very much. :)
Maybe!
Thanks! So glad you're enjoying it. :D
Poot Baker but I'm glad Harris is out of the picture, now Jack can work out how ot help Ianto :)
Yes, Jack is going to try his best to make sure Ianto is well taken care of. :D
But I'm seeing a big curveball of doom coming back to get them as soon as Tosh provides some information. Well, not doom, but angst and we love your angst(plus the fluff that follows of course ;3)
Great update.(Creepy!Harris is dead! Yay!...unless he seduced Baker and made him lie to Jack to execute his loony revenge plan...*worries*)
Don't worry, Baker is far too loyal to fall for Harris' 'charms'.
Yeah, we're not too far away from the 'curveball of doom'! I can't believe there are only five chapters left!
Thanks my dear! *huggles you*
I think you've captured the essence of Jack in this text, and this last sentence is just epic! :D *hugs* <3

Thank you so, so much! I'm so glad you liked those lines from "keep killing Suzie". I just love the pouty look on Ianto's face when the others scoff at his "risen mitten" idea. I thought it was catchy too!
Yes, you know me so well. This is indeed the calm before... well... before the shit hits the fan!
*gulp*
A stopwatch would have been a great idea!!! Wish I could have thought of a way to work on in. I like how you mind works. :D
(It should also make you happy to know that I've been busy writing all day...) ;)
I love this so much.
Jack should take Ianto back to the hub make him see how amazing he is.

Thank you so much. I'm so glad you're enjoying this. I'll post the next chapter Monday.
But I'm starting to get just a little worried about how Jack will react when he DOES find out about what Ianto did... I'm depserate for it not to change anything...
argh, awesome story =]
But yeah, thing are going to get tense soon. Hopefully Jack will think before he acts. We'll see! :D
I'm so glad you like this chapter and Jack. I love it when he takes such good care of Ianto.
Thanks my dear! :)
Sorry Im late for commenting !!
So happy that Baker is fine!
I like the way you wrote how Ianto accept his destiny, his condamnation to death...sad and powerful....

Mindi
Thanks. :D
I'm so glad you like this story. *hugs*
Love this story (as I'm sure I said before). The way you write it and the progression is just perfect.
Loved Baker bringing Jack back his gun and that he actually is concerned about Ianto too. Really like him as a character.
LOL. I think 'Risen Mitten' is catchy too Ianto! Love that even through all the torture and horribleness, Ianto still has the same traits (albeit in a very broken shell) and can still talk to Jack.
And poor Jack feeling all responsible for Ianto because he didn't give him a job (*cough* although he should *cough*). I hope he doesn't have too much trouble getting Ianto out. Can't wait to see how he responds to why Ianto is in there (my guess is it's something to do with cyberwoman!Lisa and Canary Wharf)
Can't wait for more (as always!).
Thanks! I really am proud of Baker. He's a good guy.
Jack really wants to bring Ianto back to Torchwood, now... hopefully he'll still feel the same way in a couple of chapters...
Thank you so much for reading and for the awesome feedback!
::finishes chapter:: what the--? you left it unfinished! ianto has to proposition him with a stopwatch aid still! XD
I've been wondering, do you like gwen's character? dislike her? dislike her but see her as a necessary "evil" in torchwood fics so goddamnit I'm gonna get her characterization right and/or not exaggerate her as a shrieking harpy?
There are a lot of things I dislike about her character - mostly how she treats Rhys; professing her undying love while mooning over Jack and sleeping with Owen. And how holier than thou she can get...
But at the same time, I don't like to vilify her any more than she was in the show. All of them made huge mistakes, her included, but I don't like it when people write fics where Jack hates her or she's an evil bitch... She's flawed, but Jack (and Ianto too, I think) cares about her.
She's my least favorite character, but Jack chose Ianto and hell, if I were Gwen, I'd go after Jack too. :)
And isn't Baker sweet? Love the way you've developed his character slowly through the fic. He could be an excellent ally for Jack to have in UNIT. Hopefully he'll be able to get him promoted rather than ending up getting him fired for helping him.
I love all the Risen Mitten scenes. Ianto was finally showing some real personality in the show. So glad you liked me adding that part. :D Thanks.
