Chapter 20
As Jack listened in silence his face grew darker although his eyes never left Ianto. Jack’s smile was gone and Ianto’s smile fell off his face. The young man’s eyes opened wider in horror and his entire body began to tremble violently.
“HE DID WHAT!?” Jack roared, hand reaching furiously to draw his gun. The phone shattered in his left hand as his fist closed around it. He threw the mangled phone to the floor and staked over to Ianto, his gun raised, aimed at Ianto’s head.
“On your knees!” He growled, shoving Ianto off the bed and pushing him down with a hand digging into his shoulder. As Ianto knelt he cried out involuntarily as the movement jarred his cracked ribs. Jack fisted Ianto’s hair and tugged his head back to look at his face, gun pressed to Ianto’s temple, ignoring the terrified look in his eyes.
“You hid a Cyberman within UNIT?”
Ianto squeezed his eyes closed tightly, his tremors making it hard to stay upright.
“Answer me Ianto!” Jack yelled, pulling the hair harder.
Ianto sobbed. “Her name was Lisa, she was my girlfriend. She worked for Torchwood. She was caught up in battle.”
“She was a Cyberman!”
“The conversion was never completed! I thought… I believed that she could be saved. I owed it to Lisa… to find a cure. I was willing to do anything…” Ianto bit his lip to keep from saying anything more. As the implication of what Ianto was saying hit Jack, he stumbled back and sat on the edge of the bed, stunned. Ianto, his hair released, fell to the ground in a ball, hugging his injured ribs, tears streaming down his face.
“That’s why you wanted the job. If I had hired you… Oh god, you would have snuck a Cyberman into Torchwood. My team…” Images of Gwen or Tosh or even Owen strapped down to a cyber-conversion unit caused Jack to break into a cold sweat.
Jack buried his face in his hands, the cold metal of his gun cooling his forehead. “Tosh says you infiltrated UNIT ranks, forging files to pass off as a soldier.” Jack resisted the urge to be impressed with the young man’s abilities. “In the end, nine good men fell trying to stop it.” Jack’s mind raced as he frantically tried to figure out his next move. All his instincts told him to lock Ianto away and destroy the key. He tried to feel pity for the man cowering at his feet, but as he watched him, his rage only grew. Ianto had dared to try and lie his way into Jack’s base. He was responsible for the deaths of soldiers; people with families, children, parents. Who was this Ianto to think that their lives were worth less than the monster he’d been protecting.
“You’re right, Ianto Jones, you do deserve this!” Jack stepped around the huddled man and beckoned the two soldiers on guard to come into his room.
“Will you gentlemen please escort prisoner 1717 back to his cell?” He ordered with cold efficiency. They complied at once, each taking one of Ianto’s arms and pulling him firmly from Jack’s room. Ianto went willingly not meeting Jack’s eyes as they passed him by.
Jack slammed his door behind them and re-holstered his gun. He needed time to think and he couldn’t do that with Ianto in the room. Jack slumped at the table, slamming his fist into it. He told himself he was furious, that he was happy to let Ianto suffer for what he’d done and what he’d almost allowed to happen, but in the end he was forced to admit that what he was really feeling was hurt; hurt and betrayed. Jack had come to care for that young man, more than he would have thought possible but this was unforgivable.
Jack would leave that morning as intended and Ianto would spend the rest of his life locked up. The decision didn’t make Jack feel any better, but he couldn’t see anything else that could be done. Two years ago Ianto had tried to flirt his was into Torchwood, and last night he’d tried again. The memory of their kiss was tainted by the betrayal. Jack pulled his suitcase out from under the bed and started the shove his belongings into it. He went into the bathroom to collect his things and froze at the sight of Ianto’s toothbrush nestled in the cup beside his. Jack’s brush was blue and Ianto’s was red. Jack reached out and picked them up, holding them in his hands. He looked up at his face in the mirror, surprised to see that tears were forming in his eyes. The toothbrushes clattered forgotten to the floor as Jack slammed his fist into the mirror, shattering it and cutting his hand.
Jack sighed and ran his fist under the tap, holding it up to see the cut already healing. Ianto wouldn’t heal as quickly as he did. Jack was suddenly reminded of Ianto’s body, covered in burn and scars, evidence of the torture he’d endured. Jack understood UNIT’s anger, but he couldn’t imagine so much torture being inflicted on someone simply as a punishment. And why did the Brigadier try to hide this from Jack? It was in the past; over and done with.
Suddenly the truth hit Jack and he fell to his knees gasping and clinging desperately to the edge of the sink. Ianto hadn’t been tortured as a punishment; he’d been tortured because UNIT wanted information. Ianto had first hand knowledge of how the Cybermen functioned and on the assembly and disassembly of a cyber-conversion unit. Tosh had told him that in the end UNIT had been forced to trap the Cyberman in the abandoned wing she’d been hiding in; releasing and igniting a gas that burns at extremely high temperatures. All of the technology would have been melted beyond use. Jack suspected that if they hadn’t been trying to contain and study the Cyberman, fewer lives would have been lost.
Jack’s heart broke as he realized he could never leave Ianto in the hands of UNIT interrogators. He couldn’t take the chance that Ianto would break and reveal something that could lead to the rise of the Cybermen again. He knew UNIT wouldn’t intentionally let that happen, but they were playing with fire. Jack also couldn’t simply retcon him. That had been reversed too many times to trust it with a secret this dangerous.
Ianto had been right all along. Jack hands shook as he stood, drawing his gun. Jack was going to be his executioner. Ianto Jones had to die.

Thanks! :)
I feel so bad for Ianto in this chapter... and Jack. I was terrified of posting this chapter, but I look forward to posting tomorrow's chapter. All will be well.
*hugs*
Jack don't you dare!! Poor Ianto *hugs*
More will be revealed tomorrow... turns out Jack still doesn't have the whole story...
Thanks. :D
I don't want to watch but I can't look away! Fantastic update and I can't wait for the next installment. :)
I can't stop staring at your icon; it's rather hypnotic. Cool!
Thanks! More tomorrow. :)
*shivers down my spine*
*grin*
More, more, more, more, more... *glomp*
Thanks! I'm so glad you liked it that much.
More, more, more tomorrow. :D
heuuu....
But.....
I...
*sigh*
Have to go,......
Don't worry! It'll be ok. :)
Don't even think about killing Ianto OR leave him behind!
I will find you and chain you to your desk 'till you resurrect him!!!!
If I kill Ianto or leave him behind, I will chain myself to my desk... (with no access to fanfic).
Have faith in Jack.
Thanks. :)
You hurt Ianto! Don't even think of letting Jack shoot Ianto! He is never going to trust Jack again after this! Evil you!
*catches thrown bears... hugs them and tells them all will be well*
(I didn't hurt Ianto! Jack did! Throw the bears at him!!!)
Thank God for WYklying and for not leaving us hanging with this over the weekend...I think that would have crushed me...
GAH poor Ianto...and poor Jack - just how is he going to get them out of this one....*hides in shelter*
I'm glad too. I would hate to leave everyone hanging over the weekend. I may be evil sometimes, but I'm not mean.
*hugs you* It'll be ok!
But once he thinks about it, he will realize that Ianto went through years of torture to keep that information safe. He'll realize that he can trust him.
He will realize it.
Won't he?
*lower lip trembling.
Everything you guessed sounds perfectly reasonable. Let's hope Jack agrees.
*pats you on back... tells you everything will be alright*
You are right, I'm happy that you posted today, I wouldn't have survived the weekend waiting for monday! xD
here comes my bribey, I managed to make it but I'm completely at a loss about stamp colour so I made a few, tell me if you want a different colour like red or green *huggles*
I love it. You're awesome. I hope you didn't have to rush too much on that.
I'm glad you decided that I should post early too. People would have killed me!
*huggles you*
I hope you're feeling better!
Well I assumed this was coming, although I again am thinking about getting the mob together to hunt you down for leaving us in this position. I figured once Jack knew the truth that things were going to get dicey. It's probably easier for him to kick Ianto out this time as they weren't as close as when Ianto was working for him. All this time he was feeling guilty for not taking Ianto in and now he's realized that if he had the worst could have happened to his team.
Ianto of course knew this was coming although I figure he's probably more hurt now that Jack gave him so much kindness.
I don't see Jack killing him after all this but it's a possibility I suppose. Of course he could think of it as a way to save Ianto from any more torture and keep the world safe, but then again if Jack's changed enough he'll hopefully see what he saw in the original 'Cyberwoman' episode and try to help Ianto.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it...
Yes, Jack and Ianto may have gotten close in the past two days, but that's nothing compared to in the show where they'd worked together for months. Jack is very protective (and forgiving) of his employees. Hopefully it's not too late to restore trust between them.
Jack doesn't think he can ever trust Ianto again. And yes, Ianto saw this coming, but it hurts so much more because of all the kindness; which is exactly why he tried so hard to resist the comfort Jack was offering. *sighs* Those poor boys.
More tomorrow! :D
(I like your story, and I'm glad you're sticking to it!) ;)
This was much sadder, and really hit me hard since I just watched COE - Day 4 for the first time last night. Ugh...now I am a blubbering mess.
*hugs you tight*
You guesses gave me chills... Tomorrow you'll know why...
Thanks!
PLEEEEEZE we neeed to know whats gonna happen.
(Of course he can't! Now we just need someone to convince him of that.)
Thanks. :D
that wasn't supposed to happen.
Please post more soon x
More tomorrow!
*hugs*
WAT. No effing way, I bet Jack's going to have a change of heart, please please let him have a change of heart. :(
Excellent so far, loving every section of it! :)
Have faith in Jack... he needs Ianto. He just doesn't know how much yet.
:)
More tomorrow. :) Thanks.
Thanks for reading. :)
There, there! All will be well. :)
Thanks!
Thanks for writing!
Thanks for reading! :D
Thank God for wykling's awesome bribe. I don't think I would have survived the weekend with that chapter left hanging. I wonder if the person who talks some sense into Jack is Baker? Maybe he was around when Ianto's lie was discovered. You are indeed evil with a capital 'E' ;). But I have faith in you that Jack will come to understand that Ianto Jones does not need to die, but needs forgiveness.
Stacey
And in this story Ianto has totally tortured himself mentally for not being able to save her. It’s so heartbreaking to think of what those two years must have been like for him. In the show he had a job and a purpose and the beginnings of friendships, and Jack… at UNIT he had none of that. *huggles him*
That is EXACTLY what I was hoping people would see. Ianto resisted Jack’s comfort because he knew it would only make it that much more painful when Jack found out the truth. He truly believes Jack has no choice but to kill him and he tried to keep a distance between them… but who can resist Jack when he turns on the charm!!!!????
Yeah, I knew Wykling was planning a bribe and I just knew people would kill me if I posted this chapter Friday! This way I post ch.21 tomorrow (which doesn’t end with a cliff-hanger). And then the last chapter on Monday! I can’t believe this story is almost done. I’m going to miss it! I keep meaning to get started on a sequel, but can’t seem to find the time. I’ve decided to definitely do it though. People like this story so much, I can’t leave it like it ends. I know people will want more. I just need time to write! I guess when this story is finished I’ll have a lot more free time. People will have to wait a couple of weeks and then I’ll start posting the sequel.
At least I thought up a plot for it, so that’s a good start right!?
Thanks my dear. (Good guesses about Baker…) ;)
*hugs*
w.w.w.
p.s. I like the icon.
He can kill Ianto, but I think we all know he won't. Nobody but RTD is that cruel.
Thanks! Who wouldn't want to have their name on Ianto's arse? ;)
great chapter, loved them
Thanks so much! :D
