Chapter 21
Jack’s feet felt like lead as he walked to Ianto’s cell. He needed to do this before the Brigadier got wind of it and hid Ianto away. The information contained in Ianto’s head was quite valuable to UNIT scientists.
Jack was suddenly so tired of being the man who would always do what needed to be done, no matter what it cost him. He cursed the universe for doing this to him again; giving hope and then snatching it away.
Jack suddenly sensed a presence by his arm. Baker.
“Jack? Jack, what’s going on?” Jack couldn’t bear to look at him, talk to him. If he spoke now, he was sure to fall to pieces. He needed to stay strong so he kept on walking, ignoring the other man.
“Jack! Captain Harkness, what happened? Why was Ianto brought back to his cell?” There were tremors in his voice and he sounded desperately concerned. Baker reached out to grab Jack’s arm in an attempted to force him to turn around. Jack snarled, ripping his arm out of Bakers grasp.
“Leave now Baker. I don’t think you want to be a part of this.” The new angle of Jack’s body brought his gun into view. Baker gasped and took a step back.
“Jack, no! Don’t do this. What Ianto did… It wasn’t his fault. He thought he could save her!”
Jack spun and bore down on the other man who stood bravely in the face of his rage.
“YOU KNEW!?” Jack gripped Baker by the front of his shirt and pulled him close until their noses almost touched.
“Of course I knew, almost everyone who was stationed here at the time knew.” Baker tried to sound confident, but Jack could see a bead of sweat forming on his forehead.
“Why didn’t you tell me!?” Jack roared.
“The punishment for divulging information that sensitive is death, or worse still, incarceration. I was also afraid what you would do if you found out. Ianto didn’t just infiltrate UNIT, he was allowed to believe he’d been successful. The scientists were desperate to get their hands on a live Cyberman specimen. Ianto walked in on them as they tried to transfer her to their labs. The monster had already killed three men, but the others were still determined to capture her alive. When Ianto realized what they were planning; when he realized what she had become, he sealed them in and rewired the defense systems to flood the area with flames, burning them all where they stood, destroying the equipment and his girlfriend. Ianto stopped them from getting their hands on the most dangerous technology this world has ever known. Afterwards he tried to kill himself, but they restrained him and locked him away. The others thought it was grief that made him do it, but I think he was trying to destroy the information still in his mind.” Jack’s gripped had loosened as Baker spoke and he watched horrified as the soldier continued. “They tortured him endlessly, bringing him to the brink of death only to heal him enough to resume their work. Ianto never spoke another word… at least not until you came… please Jack. I can see you care about him. He’s suffered enough. Don’t… just don’t.”
Jack’s head fell forward against Baker’s shoulder and he shuddered with grief. “It’s not that simple Baker, Ianto can’t be left alive. Someday they’ll find a way to extract the information from him. Sure, they’ll tell themselves it’s for the planet’s best interest… Know your enemy and all that, but I can’t allow that to happen. There’s too much on the line. Ianto must die.”
Baker rested his hand on the top of Jack’s head and whispered softly, “There must be another way.” Jack looked up at him, eyes soulless and dead. He placed his hand on Baker’s cheek for a second before shaking his head slowly and turning to continue on to Ianto’s cell.
“It’s… It’s not worth the risk.” Jack walked on, aware that Baker continued to follow him.
Arriving at the cell door, Jack wordlessly held out his hand for the keys, which the guards handed over after a moment’s hesitation. Jack slid the key into the lock as behind him Baker encouraged the guards to leave. With one last look at Baker, Jack slipped into Ianto’s cell, closing the door behind him.
He steeled himself against the sight of Ianto huddled in the corner of the tiny room. From the middle of the cell, Jack could easily have stretched out his arms and touched any of the four walls. Ianto was kneeling on the floor, his knees tucked into a corner and his head resting against the wall as though he was trying to meld with the cold stone; hide away from the grief and the guilt and the fear amongst the unfeeling neutrality of brick and mortar.
Jack stood there silently, unable to bear the sight but unwilling to look away. The way Ianto held his arms told Jack that he was in pain. He wanted to wrap Ianto close to his body and whisper words of comfort in his ear. The grey track pants and Jack’s gifted shirt were already blackened by the filth of the room. Jack found himself unable to move. The air was stifling in its silence.
“Please Jack. Please do it quickly.” Jack found himself unable to draw breath. Spots danced before his eyes; his chest too tight to draw in any air.
“I’m sorry Jack. Please believe that… and don’t feel bad. This is what you need to do, what I’ve always known you’d do since the moment you caught me from falling.”
Ianto wasn’t begging for his life, he’d never had any expectation of salvation. Even with Lisa; Ianto had been a fool, but he’d done it out of love… he’d done something incredibly dangerous out of love…
Ianto hadn’t tried to escape death; when he’d kissed Jack, he’d done it fully expecting and willing to die. There’d been no manipulation, no secret agenda. Jack gasped and raised his fingers to his lips. He’d kissed Jack because he wanted to. Jack’s gun fell from his numb fingers, clattering harmlessly to the floor. He flew to Ianto’s side, engulfing him in his arms as Ianto squeaked in surprise and pain.
Jack no longer had the strength to hold back or resist. With his face buried in Ianto’s neck he fought back tears; his entire body shaking as Ianto disentangled his uninjured arm to gently stroke his back.
“Oh god, Ianto… I almost… I almost… oh god! I’m so sorry.”
“Jack!” Ianto sounded panicked. “You have to do it. You know the information they want out of me. If I weren’t such a coward…” He ignored Jack’s mumbles of, never, against his neck. “Jack! Listen to me! It’s not worth the risk!”
That snapped Jack out of his grief and he pulled back, gripping Ianto’s face between his hands. “You are worth the risk Ianto Jones! Do you hear me… you are worth everything!”

Awwww. And now we have to wait 'til Monday. Sigh.
I've really enjoyed this. I'll be looking forward to your next story. :)
Thanks for writing!
I'm so glad you enjoyed this. Thanks for all the encouragement! :D
good cries!
OMG I'm all teared up *sniffs*
And that's not an easy feat, you know, crying is very complicated at the moment with my runny nose and all *laughs*
“You are worth the risk Ianto Jones! Do you hear me… you are worth everything!”
I love this line! He so is!
Yays! For Baker!!! *waves her Bandy-banner*
Wonderful chapter!
I'm so glad you liked that line. *hugs*
Thanks!
I'm so glad Baker told Jack the truth and he realised there was no manipulation behind Ianto's actions only feelings :)
I hope Jack can work out a way to get him away from UNIT soon.
Thanks so much; I'm glad you liked this chapter. It's one of my favorites.
Oh Jack, you idiot! A bit slow on the uptake but at last! Ianto, you are worth everything! *wants to cuddle all ofthe boys now*
Heehee! Thanks, I'm so glad you approve. :D
I think Jack has spent a lot of his life feeling used... when he realized that Ianto wasn't doing that it was a huge turning point for him.
:D
Am also very pleased that Jack came to his senses before he killed Ianto even though Ianto still beleives he deserves to die. Of course Ianto is worth the risk.
Can't wait for final chapter although will be sad to see it end.
Any chance of a sequel. :)
I can't believe we're almost at the end. When I first wrote this I had no intention of writing a sequel, but I also didn't know people would like it so much. I've come up with a plot however, so once this story is finished I'm going to start writing a sequel.
Thank you! *hugs*
Great chapter that made me smile and breath again!
So glad you liked it and that you can now smile and breathe again. Ianto and Jack are somehow just meant to be!
Thanks so much. :D
“They tortured him endlessly, bringing him to the brink of death only to heal him enough to resume their work."
Poor Ianto. To have been there for that long and knowing that they would never stop until he gave them the information - heart breaking.
“You are worth the risk Ianto Jones! Do you hear me… you are worth everything!”
*cough* Sorry about hitting you back in the last chapter, Jack.
LOL, great chapter (as always). Loved the ending - Jack realising that Ianto always knew what Jack would do and begging for it in the end - can't wait for the next chapter. Can't believe this is almost the end. How is Jack going to get Ianto out ... please tell me this has a happy ending?
Of course this has a happy ending!!!! I could never, EVER put everyone through that much angst if this weren't going to end well. Trust me! Jack has a few tricks up his sleeves and more importantly, he has the element of surprise. No one's actually expecting him to take Ianto right from under their noses. UNIT may tiptoe around Torchwood so as not to ruffle any feathers, but Jack has no such convictions. He's perfectly happy to piss them off without a second thought. They won't even see it coming. :D
Thank you so much for all your awesome feedback!
I have to post it Monday because there are a few changes I want to make to it before then. Nothing major, just a scene or two I want to add to. It'll be all the better for it.
Thank you so much! *grins*
This is one of my favorite chapters of the whole thing (and considering Ive read the whole story...) I just love Jack's internal battle, Baker's interferance and Ianto's brave heart. They all know what should happen, but at the same time... they all know what's right.
"Ianto wasn’t begging for his life, he’d never had any expectation of salvation. Even with Lisa; Ianto had been a fool, but he’d done it out of love… he’d done something incredibly dangerous out of love…" This whole sentence really ties in with the show. It is eacatly how I feel that Ianto felt hiding Lisa from Jack originally. He was only trying to do his best, for someone he loved. I Believe Jack's experiences with the Doctor and Rose, opened his eyes to be able to see that anything done out of Love and Loyalty are actually quite beautiful
as long as you don't die :(
You can manipulate my heart through your writing... any day!
LOVE YA , MISS YA
Thanks friend! I think this is one of my favorite chapters too. I just love that Baker stands up to Jack in the face of his rage, not worried for himself but for Ianto. Jack can be pretty scary when he's mad!
I think that line about doing something dangerous out of love is mirrored in what Jack is about to do for Ianto. They all know it's dangerous to keep him alive, but Jack's is just about to do something foolish and dangerous out of love. *sighs* I just love Janto fluff.
We just got home. Jon and I kept Missie out of school today and took her and Nate to the Zoo! Nine hours later we stumbled back in the door, completely exhausted. Nate must have had at least 10 tantrums during the course of the day! Yikes! I'll be glad when he's passed those. I'll post pictures soon. Got some great ones.
Been thinking of you. Rest well and take care.
*hugs you*
I love you and miss you too, so, so much. Darn, now I'm tearing up. *sniffle*
What's taking them so long inventing teleportation!!!!???
Good on Baker for telling all that *does a little happy dance* I was right about Baker YAY.
Lovely work, you are Awesome, have I said that before? And Ill keep saying it Awesome.
*hugs you*
I'm glad this chapter put your mind at ease. Yes you can relax; they're so close to freedom...
Gotta love Baker. You were right about him. Jack and Ianto owe him a lot. :)
That was just.
Wow.
I love this. Sooo much.
More soon. x
I'm so glad you liked it! More Monday. :D
Thanks! xoxox

Thanks for reading and for making me smile with the adorableness of you icon. SO CUTE!!! :D
Thanks! :D
I can't wait to see how this ends, but I know that I'll be sad not to look forward to updates. Will there be more fics in this universe?
I'm touched that you'll miss this story when it's done. I'm going to miss chatting with all you wonderful people.
I hadn't intended to write a sequel, but so many people want one that I've come up with a plot and will start writing it soon. :D
Thank you so much!
:D

Thank you so much!!! I'm so glad you loved it. I'm so happy to finally be able to post a chapter that makes people squeeee instead of throw things at me. Heehee.
(you do know that i'm blaming you for liking mondays? lol)
I'm so glad you liked this chapter. Baker is a bit of a hero, standing up to Jack like that. Glad you like him!
Thanks so much! :D
I'm so glad you liked this chapter. What Ianto did; what he went through to keep the information out of UNIT hands... Jack has to respect that kind of determination and courage.
I can't believe this chapter touched you that much. Thank you so much.
And yes... I've started planning a sequel. Still have to write it, but it's in the works. :D
It is almost over, but I'm going to try to write a sequel when I can find the time.
Thanks! I hope you have a lovely weekend too. :D
I love Baker by the way! Ianto is worth everything. I love the way Jack had the realization about Ianto's kiss and that is what changed his mind.
This was an amazing update!
w.w.w.
I'm so glad you like Baker. He really helped our boys get to where they are.
That kiss meant a lot to both of them. It meant a lot to Jack that it wasn't done as a manipulation.
Amazing job, hun. :D
Stacey
I'm so glad you liked this chapter. Baker did come to the rescue! *hugs him for talking sense into Jack*
Hope you have a great weekend. :D
but this is absolutely heartbreaking! I adore Baker though - he rocks arse =D
Thank you so much! :D
can't believe this is nearly over
great chapter
Thanks! :D
