I like to surround myself in things that make me happy. My family makes me happy. Even when my toddler tries to flush a full toilet paper roll, I'm still happy... albeit while pulling my hair out in frustration!
My friends make me happy. I like having them around. I'm fiercely loyal, but do tend to speak the honest truth with those I'm closest too. My absolute best friend is my husband, and he has been since we were 18. Even through the pains and heartaches that accompany married life, there is joy in my heart when he is close, and I ache for him when he is far. He's not just the man I live with, he's my confident, the holder of my secrets and dreams; he's my greatest lover, the other half that makes me whole. He makes me happy.
Working with my hands makes me happy. Whether I'm painting, doing stained glass, whatever... if my hands get dirty, scratched and my muscles sore, I enjoy it.
Being out in nature makes me happy. I love hiking and wildlife spotting. My favorite bird is the pileated woodpecker. They're huge, and when they walk, you'd swear they looked just like little dinosaurs. I try to do my best to leave as small a carbon footprint as I can. I want my kids and my kids' kids to be able to enjoy nature like I have. Composting, recycling, walking, buying local... it's not always possible, but I try my best to do what I can. Being a vegetarian makes me happy (even as I look longingly over at the bacon on my sister's pizza...). The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that the meat industry accounts for 18% of all the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. That’s a lot.
Boys kissing boys makes me veeeeeeeeeery happy. Torchwood is a dream come true because it blends my love of sci-fi with my obsession with boy love. Yes, I am a horny nerd at heart.
Discrimination, bigotry and homophobia do NOT make me happy. They make me very, very sad and angry. Fighting for GLTBQ rights alongside my Mum and my trans-brother makes me more than happy. It makes me proud. And I feel such gratitude that thanks to my brother's struggles and his openness throughout his journey, my children will grow up with none of the prejudices that I had to fight to overcome as a young adult. Thanks to him, my children will grow up safe in the knowledge that they are free to love men or woman or both or neither. They’ll know that there aren’t just 2 genders, and who you are on the inside is what truly matters.
Well that’s me, and some of that which makes me happy. (Bunnies also make me happy, and you know what… sometime a good cry can make me happy too.) Life is precious and more often than not, very, very hard. Find joy where you can.
